## roadmap for evolution
We’re building for resilience. Our roadmap is flexible and responsive, with each stage of growth evolving from opportunities uncovered in the previous one.
### seed
**people|** Core team, local collaborators, visitors
**activities|** Newsletter, gatherings, toolmaking, workshops, beta partnership
**organization|** Operational infrastructure, partnerships, grants
**funding|** Seed
This stage sets the foundations. We’ll put in place the operational infrastructure: determine the structure (e.g. co-op, steward-ownership, etc.) and establish the organization; find temporary physical space and work with local partners for permanent locations; plan grants; raise early funding. We’ll be making, telling, sharing, and hosting visitors in a lighter form, as the interim operational status allows. Our think tank/agency will begin to develop its partnership model with one or two entities.
Our priority is testing out possible collaborations, partnerships, and hires, and sharpening our positioning and focus.
### fertilize
**people|** Core team, resident faculty, residencies, visitors
**activities|** Magazine, tools, books, pop-ups, hosting, partnerships
**organization|** Depends on outcome of seed stage
**funding|** Memberships, revenue from media, products, and services, grants
This stage builds the full range of activities and outputs. We’ll have more hands on deck as we’ll recruit a small core resident faculty and longer-term visitors. We’ll produce a quarterly print Magazine, publish our first Books, develop Tools, and launch residencies. Each magazine issue will be paired with book events and longer pop-ups that bring authors, residents, and our broader community into conversation and offer hands-on unlearning and making. Having established our core protocols, our think tank/agency will formulate their offerings and expand to additional partners.
Our priority during this stage is to prioritize and build out those activities and functions that have meaningful impact, to forge a few but solid partnerships, to recruit core faculty, and to embed our organizational ethos.
### spread
**people|** Core team, resident faculty, residencies, visitors, other hubs
**activities|** Tools, books, agency, think tank, spin-outs
**organization|** Network
**funding|** Individual and organization memberships, revenue from media, products, and services, grants
Having nurtured the two starter hubs into sustainable enterprises, this stage is about multiplying by increasing impact and number rather than the scale of the hubs. This may involve launching more hubs or “grafting” some of our functions on other organizations that overlap with ours. Such fellow hubs range from rural residencies to research units in academia and industry. Based on our previous experience, we expect to see organic growth across all facets of **the between** driven by our participants, contributors, partners, and broader community.
Our priority during this stage will be to balance the original values with their natural evolution as we grow in reach and as an organization so we can remain fertile and sustainable.
